Procreate and Instagram: Let’s Not Focus on the Likes

As an illustrator, Instagram can feel like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s amazing for sharing your work, connecting with other creatives, and discovering inspiration. On the other, it can be easy to get caught up in likes, follows, and algorithm anxiety. Here’s my take on using Instagram as a Procreate artist—without letting the numbers rule your creativity.

1. Focus on the fun, Not the numbers

I’ve found that when I focus on the joy of creating in Procreate, my work is naturally more engaging. Whether I’m experimenting with a new brush, playing with colour palettes, or sketching characters for a story, the value is in the process itself. Likes may come and go, but the skills you build last forever.

2. Share What Feels Authentic

It’s tempting to post only polished, fully finished pieces. But I’ve discovered that followers love seeing sketches, experiments, or Procreate timelapses—even messy ones. Sharing what’s authentic to your workflow keeps your audience connected to you, not just your art.

3. Engagement Matters More Than Likes

Instead of chasing likes, focus on meaningful engagement: replying to comments, connecting with other artists, and joining communities. These interactions are far more rewarding than numbers on a screen, and they can lead to real opportunities, collaborations, and friendships.

4. Experiment Without Pressure

Instagram is a great place to try new styles, brushes, or storytelling ideas in Procreate—but don’t post something just to get attention. Experimentation is for growth. If a piece doesn’t get hundreds of likes, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worthwhile, it is part of your journey, your story! Be proud of that.

5. Build Your Creative Confidence

The more you separate your worth as an illustrator from social metrics, the more confident you become. I focus on finishing projects, improving my Procreate skills, and exploring new ideas—Instagram becomes a tool for sharing, not a ruler of success.

Do you like me?

Likes are fleeting, but the skills, ideas, and joy you cultivate in Procreate are lasting. Treat Instagram as a place to connect, learn, and showcase your creativity—not as a scoreboard. Post your work for the joy of creating, and the right audience will follow, engage, and appreciate your art for what it truly is.
